Importance of prayer (Salah) according to the Quran and Hadith’s

Prayer is the second pillar of Islam. It is a way that connects a human with their creators. Daily five times prayer are obligatory for all Muslims. Islam told the value of prayer time through Quranic Ayats and Prophet Hadith’s. Here are some Ayats and Hadith’s on the importance of Salah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Indeed the first deed by which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his Salat. If it is complete, he is successful and saved, but if it is defective, he has failed and lost… (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 413)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

 “The prayer is the pillar of the religion.” (Jami’us Saghir,Hilyatul Awliya)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever attends Isha (prayer) in congregation, then he has (the reward as if he had) stood half of the night. And whoever prays Isha and Fajr in congregation, then he has (the reward as if he had) spend the entire night standing (in prayer).” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 221)

 Reported from Abu Hurayra radiyallahu anh:

 While the Messenger of Allah was passing by a grave, he asked, “Whose grave is it?” The Companions said, “It is the grave of such and such person.” The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “For this person in the grave, to perform a prayer of two-rak’ahs is better than all of your worldly goods.” (Tabarani, Majma’uz Zawaid)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The Prophet was asked: ‘Which deed is the best?’ So he said: ‘Salat in the beginning of its time.'” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 170)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The two Rak’ah before the dawn (Fajr) prayer are better than this world and all it contains.” [Muslim]……. (Riyad as-Salihin 1102)

Hazrat Abu Dharr radiyallahu anh says:

Once, the Prophet (pbuh) went out in winter. A lot of leaves were falling off the trees. When he held a branch of a tree, more leaves started to fall off. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said “O Abu Dharr!” I said, “Yes, o Messenger of Allah!” The Prophet (pbuh) said, “If a Muslim performs prayers in order to please Allah, his sins will be shed like the leaves of this tree are shed.” (Musnad Ahmad)

It is mentioned in the Quran:

You shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) at both ends of the day, and during the night. The righteous works wipe out the evil works. This is a reminder for those who would take heed. [11:114]

in another place Quran says:

You shall observe the Contact Prayer (salat) when the sun declines from its highest point at noon, as it moves towards sunset. You shall also observe (the recitation of) the Quran at dawn. (Reciting) the Quran at dawn is witnessed. [17:78]

Here Quran describes believer:

“You shall recite what is revealed to you of your Lord’s Scripture (the Quran). Nothing shall abrogate His words, and you shall not find any other source beside it.” [18:27]
