Importance of prayer (Salah) according to the Quran and Hadiths

Prayer is the second pillar of Islam. It is a way that connects a human with their creators. Five times of prayer are obligatory for all Muslims. Islam told the value of prayer time through Quranic Ayat and Prophet Hadith. Here are some Ayats and Hadith’s on the importance of Salah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

Indeed the first deed by which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his Salat. If it is complete, he is successful and saved, but if it is defective, he has failed and lost… (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 413)

Reported by Abu Hurayra:

 “then, the Prophet (pbuh) visits a group of people whose heads are smashed and broken by stones. Their heads are smashed by stones and then are restored; the torture goes on like that. The Prophet (pbuh) asks, ‘O Jibril (Gabriel)! Who are they?’ Jibril answers, ‘They are those who perform fard prayers lazily.’” (Mundhiri, Bukhari)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“I made it fard for your ummah to perform five daily prayers. And I made a promise to myself: If someone comes to me by paying attention to performing five daily prayers, I will send him to Paradise. I have nothing to say for the one who does pay attention to prayers.” (Abu Dawud)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“No Salat is more burdensome to the hypocrites than the Fajr (dawn) prayer and the ‘Isha’ (night) prayer; and if they knew their merits, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. (Riyad as-Salihin 1073)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The Prophet was asked: ‘Which deed is the best?’ So he said: ‘Salat in the beginning of its time.'” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 170)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“When man prostrates upon reciting a verse of prostration, Satan moves away from that place by crying and says, ‘I was destroyed. Man was ordered to prostrate and he did; thus, he deserved Paradise. I was also ordered to prostrate but I avoided prostrating. I deserve hellfire.’” (from Sahih Muslim: 81)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The key to Paradise is Salat, and the key to Salat is Wudu’.”

It is mentioned in the Quran:

“They are not all the same; among the followers of the scripture there are those who are righteous. They recite God’s revelations through the night while prostrating.” [3:113]

in another place Quran says:

Your (real) friends are (no less than) Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers,- those who establish regular prayers and regular charity, and they bow down humbly (in worship). [5:55]

Here Quran describes believer:

As to those who hold fast by the Book and establish regular prayer,- never shall We suffer the reward of the righteous to perish. [7:170]
