Importance of prayer (Salah) according to the Quran and Hadiths

Prayer is the second pillar of Islam. It is a way that connects a human with their creators, So Islam advices his followers to pray five time in a day. Daily five times prayer are obligatory for all Muslims. Islam told the value of prayer time through Quranic Ayah and Prophet Hadiths. Here are some Ayat and Hadith for the importance of Salah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The prayer of a person who performs five daily prayers without missing will be brightness, evidence and salvation for him on the Day of Judgment. A person who does not perform five daily prayers properly will be together with Qarun (Croesus), Haman, Pharaoh and Ubayy Ibn Khalaf.” (Musnad: 2/169, Darimi: 2/301, Ibn Hibban: 1448)

reported by Abu Hurayra:

“…then, the Prophet (pbuh) visits a group of people whose heads are smashed and broken by stones. Their heads are smashed by stones and then are restored; the torture goes on like that. The Prophet (pbuh) asks, ‘O Jibril (Gabriel)! Who are they?’ Jibril answers, ‘They are those who perform fard prayers lazily.’” (Mundhiri, Bukhari)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“I made it fard for your ummah to perform five daily prayers. And I made a promise to myself: If someone comes to me by paying attention to performing five daily prayers, I will send him to Paradise. I have nothing to say for the one who does pay attention to prayers.” (Abu Dawud)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The two Rak’ah before the dawn (Fajr) prayer are better than this world and all it contains.” [Muslim]……. (Riyad as-Salihin 1102)

 reported from Abu Hurayra radiyallahu anh:

 While the Messenger of Allah was passing by a grave, he asked, “Whose grave is it?” The Companions said, “It is the grave of such and such person.” The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, “For this person in the grave, to perform a prayer of two-rak’ahs is better than all of your worldly goods.” (Tabarani, Majma’uz Zawaid)

It is mentioned in the Quran:

“And during part of the night, (also,) celebrate His praises, and (so likewise) after the postures of adoration.” [50:40]

in another place Quran says:

And they have been commanded no more than this: To worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight. [98:5]

Here Quran describes believer:

“And (ask) of the Sinners: What led you into Hell Fire? They will say: “We were not of those who prayed; Nor were we of those who fed the indigent” [74:41-44]
